SOMETIME IN THE 1600S : MASSACHUSETTS - MARYANNE’s widowed mother is hung, accused of being a witch. maryanne curses the town in anger and revenge (accidentally, not knowing she truly had magic), and the town attempts to burn her at the stake. the fire does not catch, and instead jumps off and burns down the town hall. maryanne is shoved in a bag, tied to rocks, and thrown down the river to drown.SOMETIME IN THE 1700S : MINNESOTA - SARAH is born on a ship over from ireland during the industrial revolution; her mother dies in childbirth before they dock. her father raises her as a blacksmith’s apprentice, where she accidentally learns she can turn iron into gold. father finds out, and accuses her of devil worship; chasing her with his rifle into the snow. sarah freezes to death four miles out of the town’s limits.SOMETIME IN THE 1800S : LOUISIANA - CHICKADEE is conceived through the infidelity of her mother sleeping with the town’s pastor while her husband, a sailor, is away at sea. lying to hide it, she claimed it a miracle birth; however, being born of sin, chickadee was born possessed of a demon that would make her, among other things, refuse to speak, eat raw flesh, burn at the touch of holy water. her mother decided to take her out to the woods, drown her in the swamp, and tell the town she’d simply ran away.SOMETIME IN THE 1920S : CALIFORNIA - BARBARA (BABY) marries her sweetheart before he goes off to war, and immediately regrets it when he intends to turn her into a housewife. she wishes for a way out, and accidentally casts a spell- she receives a letter notifying her of his death four days later. as a new widow and realized witch, she uses her aura manipulation to get a man to cheat on his wife with her; when his wife finds them, she shoots them both dead with a shotgun.MARCH 12TH 2019 : LOUISIANA - the DEMON inside of CHICKADEE is tired of being tied to her despite her being dead- he sparks her back to life, accidentally causing her own unknown magic to manifest, as a restoration witch. a shockwave is sent out in all directions when she comes back to life, trying to attach to any witches it can- most cannot connect to it, but some can; few can actually bond their souls back to their bodies, fewer still can rebuild their bodies in that magical flash, and only 4 overall survive the entire ordeal. those four are CHICKADEE, BARBARA, SARAH, and MARYANNE.MARCH 25TH 2019 : ILLINOIS - after their awakening, the four try to seek out the others; after spending so much time as only souls, they are able to feel the difference between mortal, magic, and exceptional souls (the four of them being exceptional, as they’re older than usual, and brought back from the dead). MARYANNE and SARAH find each other first, and forge a strong bond as two women out of time. CHICKADEE and BABY find each other as they both navigate individually towards the stronger pulse of maryanne and sarah, and end up travelling together.UPON JOINING UP TOGETHER, with all of the weird-feeling souls in one place, they can recognize now that there is a gaping hole where they can’t feel anything in the center of illinois- dead souls are still souls, so they know it’s not just a bunch of dead people, it’s just an absence of energy altogether. they decide, since most likely nobody else is going to recognize a problem (due to their unique circumstances in finding it themselves), they should at least go triangulate the position and see what’s going on down there.

IN THE CITY

SANDY’S APOTHECARY. sandy’s apothecary is a bit of a safe-haven for witches; non-magic folk don’t see it as anything more than a house overgrown with weeds, but a witch can see it as a carefully crafted wild garden, full of plants and flowers used for a multitude of potions, poisons, balms, and tinctures. he doesn’t usually charge money, only for large orders- like the tea shop on main street, when they commission him for magically-enhanced blends. often times, he works as a caretaker of the other magics in the town; if you need a potion, or you can’t afford to go to the hospital, you go to sandy, and he’ll fix you up. later on, it becomes a bit of a hideaway for witches on the run during the “war”, since it’s almost impossible to pinpoint it unless you know what you’re looking for.CITY HALL.

THE JUNKYARD. the dickies spend all their time here- when they aren’t cruising the streets. they’ve essentially made a hideout from old car parts and trailer walls, where they both practice their skills far away from the peering eyes of the non-magic folk, and shoot the shit in a chaotic enough environment to feel “at home” in. most of them come from shitty homes or bad environments, so all they care about is a place with supportive friends- it really doesn’t have to be pretty. the junkyard (and surrounding abandoned processing plants and such) becomes the headquarters for the magical rebellion front once the high tea society kicks into apocalypse gear.JOHNSON FAMILY FARM.
